Amersham U14 v Great Kingshill U14

Amersham U14 v Great Kingshill U14

Great Kingshill U14 had the privilege of starting their Bucks Div 1 season by playing at the beautiful Shardeloes ground.....the home of Amersham CC.

Captain Ben Hobbs inserted Amersham having won the toss. It was soon clear that we would be up against some very strong batting in this top division this year with the openers racing away to 35 after 4 overs. This was mainly due to extras, with our opening bowlers, Ben and Owen Collins, generally bowling accurately. Teddy Payne, Karthik and Nina then bowled tidy overs to pull the scoring rate back a bit and each picked up a wicket, between them bowling 8 overs, 3 wickets for 41 runs in the middle of the Amersham innings. The remaining bowlers all did a steady job, with Owen, James Ketley and Will Yeates all picking up a wicket each and Jack Prior bowling 2 overs of leg spin. I should also comment on the excellent outfielding from Will Junnola-Schofield and some good stops by Lasen on a difficult surface to keep wicket on (keeping low). Despite our best efforts, Amersham got to a very strong score of 151 for 6 at the end of their 20 overs. However, within that, we gave away 46 extras, which is clearly something we need to work on in training.

Unfortunately, our opening batsman, Jack Wetherell, bruised his fingers in the field so was unable to bowl and also only batted way down the order when it came to our innings.

It is fair to say that we found the bowling a step up in Div 1 from what we experienced last year in Div 2. Despite that, the batsmen generally showed that they could survive against accurate bowling, with Owen, Ben and Teddy in particular ready to take the attack to the opposition and score some good runs. I should highlight the innings of Ben , who made a fine 28. We finished on 77 for 8 after the 20 overs, after a few strong blows from Jack Wetherell at the end.

So we lost by 74 runs .... but when you consider that we gave away 46 extras.... the game could have been a lot closer.

So a good introduction to the tougher standards in Div 1 against strong opposition. I think we can be competitive if we tighten up our bowling and fielding and give ourselves a less challenging target to chase.
