Chance to shineChance to Shine (C2S) is a national campaign delivered through individual projects taking place throughout every part of England and Wales. The clear motivation behind C2S lies in recognising the power of competitive team sports, and cricket in particular, to help young people develop skills and attitudes that will help them in all aspects of their future lives.

In 2006, Great Kingshill Cricket Club entered into a 3 year Memorandum of Understanding (M of U) with the Cricket Foundation, the charitable arm of the ECB, as 1 of only 2 Buckinghamshire cricket clubs to be selected to administer the C2S programme, in the first year of the initiative.

The requirement to provide 20 hours of curriculum, and after school coaching to local schools, and 40 hours of coaching in cricket camps during school holidays, has previously benefitted the following local schools:

  • Great Kingshill C of E Combined
  • Prestwood Junior
  • Holmer Green Junior
  • Manor Farm Junior
  • Hazlemere Junior
  • Widmer End Combined
  • The Misbourne
  • Sir William Ramsey
  • Holmer Green Senior

In 2009, Great Kingshill Cricket Club signed a one year extension to the M of U, and although we will be reducing the number of schools that we send our coaches to, we aim to coninue our support of those schools in the immediate vicinity, namely:

  • Great Kingshill C of E Combined
  • Prestwood Junior
  • The Misbourne

We will also continue to run a cricket camp at the club during the school holidays, as well as organising a Kwik Cricket festival for both boys and girls from the schools in the Wycombe District, and a hardball league in which the schools play for GKCC Chance to Shine medals.

As a result of joining the C2S programme, the club has benefitted from the installation of a non turf pitch (NTP), which the junior schools use for inter-school matches. This has also enabled the club to arrange more junior fixtures, as the NTP requires less maintenance than a traditional grass pitch. More importantly, the club has strengthened its links with the local schools, and our junior club membership has nearly doubled in size to 168, along with the creation of a junior girls section.
