Gerrards Cross A U11's v Great Kingshill U11's
By Richard Bruton
Another close finish with Great Kingshill losing by 8 runs despite taking 12 wickets.
Great Kingshill (GK) travelled to Gerrards Cross(GX) on Friday evening, the hosts won the toss and put GK into bat on a wicket, which with the wet weather we have been having, was soft and slow and also keeping low, being a marked contrast to the non turf pitch played on in home matches. Consequently our batters found it difficult to adjust and losing 2 wickets to the first two balls of the match was not the start we were hoping for. GX bowled accurately and GK lost wickets throughout the innings, with only Zac and Nick as a pairing keeping their wicket intact and also scoring 28 runs in their 4 overs. Will and Sam batted positively and scored 27 runs but also were out 3 times in their efforts to score the required runs for a par score and GK finished on 228 for 9 wickets.
In reply GX started steadily with their first pair playing defensively against Jacob and Nick. The next 3 pairs of batters hit the short balls being bowled to the boundary and despite some excellent fielding which produced 4 run outs, when the last pair went in to bat GX were well in front with the score at 245. It looked as though we were in for another close finish with another run out and a wicket taken by Sam. In the last over Will found his rhythm and was bowling fast and accurately and took 2 more wickets but some resolute defending and GX finished on 236 for 12 winning by 8 runs.
After the game the GX manager was very impressed with our fielding with direct hits from accurate throws from distance from Sam, Zac and Joe and four catches offered all taken.
In addition the pleasing aspect for me was that our running between the wickets improved and we did not have any run outs in our innings.
