GKCC U13 v Chalfont St Giles U13 - Bucks Div 2

GKCC U13 v Chalfont St Giles U13 - Bucks Div 2

On a glorious summer's evening (for a change) GKCC U13 entertained Chalfont St Giles U13 in a promotion defining Div 2 league match. At the start of proceedings Chalfont, in 2nd place, sat above GKCC in 3rd place, with the top 2 in the division likely to be promoted ... so everything to play for.

Captain Ben Hobbs won the toss and inserted Chalfont on a good looking and dry grass wicket. The opposition's openers made a good, solid start and were soon 47 without loss after 10 overs. Although GKCC did not take a wicket in these opening overs, we also never let the scoring rate get away from us, despite our bowling on average a wide an over, resulting in an extra ball an over. Michael Mackenzie-Crooks made the break through with his left arm seam bowling, removing Chalfont's best batsman. With good tight overs from Ben Hobbs, Ninura, Teddy Payne , Michael and the spin twins, Tom Parker and Karthik, the scoring rate continued to slow. Owen collins then bowled a devastating couple of overs taking 3 wickets and James Ketley picked up a good wicket too, and as a result we restricted Chalfont to 95 for 5 in their 20 overs. Fielding was keen throughout with Lasen doing a solid job behind the stumps.

In reply, we lost Karthik early on to a good ball from Chalfont's opening bowler. Owen and Ben then put on 52 for the second wicket in good time, before Owen was unfortunately run out for a very good 21. Ben went on to score a nice 32 at which point he had to retire under the league rules, leaving Michael M-C in control of our innings. Michael batted very sensibly for his 14 not out, backed up by Jack Prior and Teddy, before Will Junnola-Schofield brought matters to an explosive conclusion , hitting 11 off 3 balls, including one enormous 6, to win the match. GKCC ended up on 96 for 5 in just 15 overs, so won with time to spare.

It was another excellent team performance, and means that we are now top of the league. Wooburn have a game in hand and if they win that they will leap frog us to to the league title, but the worst we can achieve now is 2nd place, so a promotion place is secured. We can still win the league if Wooburn lose their last match or fail to play it by the league deadline.

Well done to all the lads on an excellent match and an excellent season. In all the lads played 11 matches this season and won 8 of them. One of the losses was against High Wycombe A in the cup, who are top of Div 1 and commented that we had given them their hardest match of the season to date. So much to be proud of lads - well done!
